Used For
Zithromax (Azithromycin) is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, throat infections, ear infections, skin infections, and certain sexually transmitted bacterial infections.
How It Works
Azithromycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein production, which prevents susceptible bacteria from growing and multiplying.
Usage & Safety
Dosage:
Take Zithromax exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The dose and duration depend on the type and severity of the infection, the patient’s age, and other medical factors. It may be taken with or without food depending on the formulation.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, vomiting, and headache. Serious allergic reactions, severe diarrhea, or symptoms of abnormal heart rhythm require immediate medical attention.
Drug Interactions:
Zithromax may interact with medicines that affect heart rhythm and certain other medicines. Inform your doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, and supplements you are taking.
Indications
Zithromax may be prescribed for susceptible bacterial infections such as:

When Not to Use
Do not use Zithromax if you have a known allergy to Azithromycin, erythromycin, or other macrolide antibiotics. It should also be avoided in patients with a history of cholestatic jaundice or liver dysfunction associated with previous Azithromycin use.
Precautions
Use with caution in patients with liver disease, heart-rhythm problems, or a history of prolonged QT interval. Tell your doctor if you develop persistent diarrhea during or after treatment.
Warnings
Azithromycin can rarely cause serious allergic reactions, liver problems, severe diarrhea, and abnormal heart rhythms. Seek medical attention if you experience severe rash, difficulty breathing, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fainting, or persistent severe diarrhea.
Pregnancy
Zithromax may be used during pregnancy when specifically recommended by a doctor after assessment of the potential benefits and risks.
